calculating tile

How much tile do i need?

It may seem complicated, but with a tape measure, calculator and some guidance it's really fairly simple.

step 1.

You must first determine where you want tile installed.

step 2.

It's easiest to draw a diagram of the area on a sheet of paper.  You will be measuring squares or rectangles so draw your area accordingly.

AREA 2

80"x 30"

AREA 1

30"x 20"

step 3.

Measure the rectangles and write down the measurements.

example:  area 1 is 30" wide by 20" high

area 2 is 80" wide by 30" high

step 4.

Once you have measured and recorded all your boxes its time to do the math.  You will multiply all your measurements individually and record the numbers.

example  area 1 (30x20) = 600

                area 2 (80x30) = 2400

Add the final numbers together

                600+2400 = 3000

This gets you the total square inches.  Since tile is ordered by square feet you will divide the number by 144.

example  3000 / 144 = 20.83 sq ft

step 5.

It's time to add some additional tile for wastage / breakage.  I recommend 15%

example 20.83 x 1.15 = 23.95    Lets round up to 24 sq ft

step 6.

The last step (and in my opinion, the most important) is to give me a call to set up your professional backsplash installation!
